Chiliomodi – the birthplace of Irini Papa

When its first inhabitants produced and sold within a year a total weight of wheat equal to 1,000 modia, an unimaginable number of quantity for the time, the village got its official name. (1,000 is pronounced Chilia in Greek – Chilio/modi)

It is located in Eastern Corinthia and is a passage from the hinterland to Athens. Thus, having this favorable position, it developed until today, becoming the capital of the Municipal Unit of Teneas with the villages of Agionori, Agios Vasilios, Klenia, Koutala, Mapso, Spathovouni and Stefani.

Many well-known and successful Greeks come from Chiliomodi, the most famous on an international scale being Irini Papa (actress, singer). Among them: Vassilis Rotas (author, critic and translator), Manousos Manousakis (director, producer and writer), Nikos Tagaras (Member of Parliament and governor), Panagiotis Verdes (inventor of V-Cubes, entrepreneur), 1000mods (rock music group) .

The nature around Chiliomodi is enchanting, full of pines and centuries-old trees, famous for the area. When part of the pine forest burned in 2007, a model environmental volunteer group was created with continuous, active action and an official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/sosteto1/.

In Chiliomodi one can find all necessary services, schools, sports centres, shops, as well as high standard tourist accommodation. It has a daily connection with local bus routes from Corinth, while the new Open Air Theatre, with a capacity of 800 seats, was recently built and inaugurated. It honourably bears the name of Irini Papa, who made her birthplace famous through her contribution to the global, timeless theatre scene.
