April’s weather, which continued into the current month, with continuous rains and storms in the wider region of Peloponnese, which hosts the International Canyoning Festival 2023, led to the cutting of some canyons from our list.
Selinoundas river does not allow us to descend Trano Lagadi canyon and Sergulopotamos stream makes it impossible to descend Sergoula canyon. Also, excluded are the descents of Rodini and Vloga canyons. In Gortynia, the rainfall is unprecedented high this year. So, unfortunately, we will not be able to enter Arsis and Kleivoka canyons at all.
The descents of Agios Loukas and Kallithea are currently also prohibited, due to the large amount of water. We know that many friends want to have the experience of the Kallithea canyon but we ask you to be patient until Wednesday 17/5 so we can see how the weather is going and check the water flow. Even so, these two canyons will be in the extreme canyoning category, suitable only for very experienced canyoners in rapids.
A recommended canyon is Lepida, with its impressive 72 meter waterfall. The water is slowly disappearing and now is the right time. Canyoning.ai will provide the teams with a new 100 meter rope for an easier descent.
Mikros Helmos and Erarchos canyons are highlights of the Canyoning Festival. However, due to the rains, we did not manage to make the necessary improvements that we wanted. They are secured with double straps, which we wanted to replace with stainless steel bolts. Teams that entered in Easter 2023 saw no danger, however a full rigging kit with drill, batteries and materials for absolutely safe descents is available to any team that would like to visit the canyons.
