Location:
Fonissa canyon is formed by the homonymous river which creates a deep gap, from the village of Vrysoules to Loutro, in the Municipality of Xilokastro-Eurostinis. When water flow is large it is an extremely dangerous canyon – hence its name. (in Greek “Fonissa” means female killer.)
Specifications:
Fonissa canyon was secured for the first time in 1984 and is frequently visited. During the spring it has water. The first dark part appears almost immediately, after the first rappel. For 800 meters it turns into a cave canyon. When crossing the walls become very narrow, creating cave characteristics, which give an impressive specificity to the landscape. The usual width is 2-3 meters and the walls are made of solid limestone. It has 5 technical descents with the highest height at 18 meters. The light appears just before the exit, located in a lemon grove.
Short description:
To enter Fonissa, go from Kato Loutro to Korfiotissa. Just before Korfiotissa, turn left on the dirt road towards the stream. At all intersections we turn in the direction of the antenna of the opposite hill. The entrance is at the end of the dirt road. Usually for the descent of Fonissa canyon the groups are supported at a small cost by 1-2 open 4X4s that transport them to the entrance. 4X4s are not required to access the exit.
