International Canyoning Festival Greece 2023

12 - 21 May 2023

Stefani – the Observatory

Stefani canyon is included in the canyons of the International Canyoning Festival Greece 2023, even though it will probably be dry in May. The reason is that the organising committee of the Festival wanted to focus the attention of the international canyoning community on the state-of-the-art Observatory of the village.

We still haven’t decided which day it will be, however the people of the Stefani Observatory will make a presentation during the Festival at the Freeland Adventure Camp or we will organize an official visit to the site, in the village of Stefani. You will be informed about this through the website.

Stefani is a village with a special atmosphere. The landscape is wild and windswept, with nature that has remained unchanged over time and the inhabitants are traditionally descendants of the Mycenaeans. The stone-built houses, dry stone walls, water mills and stone fountains make up a special scenery. Here, the stars shine differently and more intensely than in other parts of the Peloponnese, seen even with the naked eye.

To the west and up the hill, the Stefani Observatory is functioning for 40 years, today considered a leading research institution in the world.

As Argolithokorinthia is the area of Greece with the least cloudiness, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki monitors the sky and especially the variable stars, showing an excellent presence in the field of astrophysical, scientific observations.

On the internet you can find a lot of information about the village of Stefani and the Observatory. Here we paste the official website of the village, as we discovered it while looking to learn about this great project that is being carried out in our country: https://stephanion.gr/cms/
